Wild geese…

Wild Geese

by Mary Oliver

You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.

Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.

Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting —
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.

My father just passed away. Tears have been shed… great floods of tears… and i cry for the tsunami victims as well. This poem offers me solace, in a bittersweet way.

May I be a beacon of light

May I relax deeply into my beingness today

With every step I take

May I inspire joy and prosperity

May each person I meet

be touched without their knowing

May I smile with ease

and laugh without care

May all be well and happy

This is a poem written when i was 18 years old…. haha, such a long time ago. It was addressed to an ex of mine… i met him online recently, may he be well and happy. šŸ™‚ I am learning that everything on the outside is a reflection on the inside. This is demonstrated by the efficacy of Byron Katie’s “Turnaround” technique (where you replace all the pronouns with the opposite e.g. He hates me -> I hate myself). So in writing this poem, i am reminding myself if this is the way i behave sometimes… may i learn and keep on improving myself.

Sometimes when i talk to you

i feel like I’m speaking to a wall

Sure, at least you have a mouth

But what’s the point when you don’t use it at all

And even when you do, the answers you give

Leaves so much to be desired

One-word replies that don’t say anything

Do you know that i’m sick and tired

I’m tired of your stupid attitude

How you prefer to stay away when i’m mad

Is that your way of handling the situation?

Do you realise it only makes me sad

Maybe guys’re not supposed to be adept at such things

Well, i think it’s damn unfair

Doesn’t mean that if you are a GUY, period

That you can use it as an excuse for not having to care

Stop asking me what i want you to say

I’m not asking you to recite any script

I’m not even asking you for promises or apologies

A sharing of feelings and thoughts is all i need

Stop asking me what i want you to do

Hey, i’m your girlfriend not your boss

I thought that you have a mind of your own

Why is it that when it comes to these things are you at such a loss

I don’t expect you to be a mind reader

That’s why i tell you when (sometimes why) i’m angry

But i didn’t expect your passiveness (or is it nonchalance)

That I actually had to demand for an apology

For someone who calls himself my boyfriend

You can be almost like a stranger at times

When I complain of not being able to trust you

Can you do something about it instead of being so resigned

You know why i feel like i’m speaking to a wall sometimes

It’s because you’ve built that wall around yourself

With a sign that days “Private – no entry to outsiders”

Thanks, for i guess that applies to me as well

If you still want to know what exactly do I want

(Though i think you should get the idea by now)

Please do something about that wall of yours

Give me a chance to get in to you, somehow.

Lovely advice in this passage…

Go placidly amid the noise and haste and remember

what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible without surrender

be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly;

and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant;

they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons,

they are vexations to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others,

you may become vain and bitter;

for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble;

it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs;

for the world is full of trickery.

But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;

many persons strive for high ideals;

and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.

Especially, do not feign affection.

Neither be cynical about love;

for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment

it is perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,

gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you from sudden misfortune.

But do not distress yourself with imaginings.

Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline,

be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe,

no less than the trees and the stars,

you have a right to be here.

And whether or not it is clear to you,

no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,

whatever you conceive Him to be,

and whatever your labours and aspiration,

in the noisy confusion of life

keep peace with your soul

With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams,

it is still a beautiful world.

Be careful.

Strive to be happy.
